Pediatric Psychiatry Consultation-Liaison Service
The Pediatric Psychiatry Consultation-Liaison (C-L) Service provides inpatient and outpatient psychiatric
consultation, evaluation, and treatment related to the psychological adjustment of children and families
with acute and chronic mental illness at St. Luke’s and Roosevelt Hospitals. The service receives approximately
250 inpatient consultations annually. Consultations are provided to all pediatric inpatient services,
including general pediatric inpatient services, pediatric intensive care unit (at Roosevelt Hospital),
neonatal intensive care unit, pediatric neurology and neurosurgery, and other pediatric sub-specialty services.
Children served are those who present with psychiatric complications of a medical illness or a primary psychiatric
disorder complicating a medical illness. Non-compliance with medical treatment, child abuse / neglect /
maltreatment, complicated medical and/or neuropsychiatric syndromes, medical illnesses presenting with
psychiatric symptoms, chronic pain, failure to thrive and emotional adjustment to medical illness are among
the many types of presenting problems. The multidisciplinary C-L team works closely with pediatricians, nurses,
child life specialists, pediatric nutritionists, and others with the goal of facilitating the medical care of
the child and the psychological well being of the child and family. Upon discharge, if needed, children may be
referred to an inpatient child and adolescent inpatient psychiatry unit or may be followed up through the Child
and Adolescent Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic. Other children may be referred to community mental health agencies
or private mental health providers in their area.
Outpatient C-L services include services for pediatric patients with chronic illnesses and co-morbid psychiatric
conditions or psychological factors, which impact on their medical care (most notably Sickle Cell Disease,
Diabetes, Obesity, and HIV).
The Consultation-Liaison Service is available on a 24-hour basis to medical/surgical pediatric inpatients
hospitalized at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center.
